KNIGHT

“Dack,” Ronin huffs as we try to catch our breaths. “Does this place have a dacking way out?”

We’re crouched behind a door, the only door that wasn’t locked.

“Timothan would have more than one way out,” I state. “They just won’t be obvious to most and I doubt any of the workers are aware of them.”

“We should have taken him hostage,” Ronin quips.

The sound of boots stomping by the door causes me to refrain from answering for a few seconds.

My head shakes in opposition. “He would have only slowed us down.”

“Then, we should have killed him,” Ronin counters. “We had the—“

“We wouldn’t have found out about Lolly or Red with him dead,” I remind.

Ronin lets out a heavy sigh. “Dack.” He slides up the side of the door and peers out the small window. “What now?”

“We stick with the plan.”

“They know we’re here,” Ronin reminds. “We can’t wander, looking for our mates while trying to not get captured or killed.”

“Dack,” I say through a clenched jaw. “If they were down here, I’m sure he would have moved them by now.”

I shouldn’t have brought Ronin with me. I should have told him where the hidden door was and to only follow after if I didn’t return. There’s so much that is different in this place that it’s as if I was never here.

“Knight,” Ronin calls, pulling me from my thoughts.

“We need to try and find them,” I confirm. “We might have to take a soldier hostage. One of them would be more likely to share information than Timothan.”

“Then what?”

“If we find them, you will get them out of this sovereign,” I command.

“What about you?”

“I will be right behind you,” I say.

Ronin’s head sways. “Don’t dacking lie to me.”

“I’m not lying,” I fib.

“Yes, you are,” he argues. “You have that twitch in your eye when you tell Red one thing and do the opposite.”

“On the count of three, we find our mates and a way out.”

Ronin nods.

“One…two…” as I turn the knob, I mentally say three.

We race through the hallway, finding a single door that opens with ease. We cover each other’s back as we make our way through another that has more rooms on either side. Darkness lies beyond those with a small, square window, and it takes everything I have from banging each one open to find Red.

The feeling Ronin has that Lolly is close by fuels me, but deep down inside, I know that Red is not here with her. I’ve known since the moment I woke to her missing. I don’t know how to explain what I know or feel, but at least I know that Red’s still alive which is the only thing that drives me to keep going.

As we enter through the door at the end of the hallway, Ronin stops dead in his tracks, causing me to collide with him. His expression is all that I need to see. When I turn to face the direction he’s looking, I find Lolly strapped to a table. The wall is completely made up of glass with barely the hint of a glass door to it.
